Replacing Physical Cards with Mobile Access

Project goal: Centralize access card system by issuing mobile credentials

Workstream: Auxiliary Services

Project owner: Bryon Buchmiller, UCard Services Director

Background: The University of Utah prioritizes student safety and security, with a particular focus on access systems for on-campus housing. Traditionally, students used physical cards as their primary “key” to enter dormitories, use meal plans, ride public transit, and access university events. However, with students increasingly relying on mobile devices, the U identified mobile credentials as an alternative, more secure and convenient solution to physical cards.

Efforts underway: In May 2024, mobile credentials were introduced for incoming students, simplifying the dorm check-in process and improving the overall student experience. With this change, students no longer need to stand in long lines to obtain physical UCards. Instead, they can requisition their credentials directly on their phones, streamlining access to essential services from the moment they arrive on campus. The new credentials also improve coordination between the UCard Office and Housing and Residential Education (HRE).

Looking ahead: The university will continue upgrading door readers to support mobile credentials and encouraging students to adopt this secure, convenient technology.

In their words: “Operational Excellence was so valuable for providing feedback regarding the mobile credential implementation. It was a great tool to ensure all who were involved were aware of the project progress.” - Bryon Buchmiller, project owner
